Hoewel Klepper & Klepper van al hun dropjes evenveel houden (allemaal op hun eigen manier natuurlijk), heeft De Beste Volzoete Drop Ooit natuurlijk wel een speciaal plekje in hun hart. Dit was immers het dropje waarmee het allemaal begon. Dit was de allereerste Beste Drop Ooit.
It’s Valentine’s Day 1990. The very first day that Klepper Sr. was on the Alkmaar market. It’s raining and it’s storming. Dog weather, in short. In short, dog weather. And yet… still people come to his market stall to buy sweets. It makes an indelible impression on Klepper Sr. He thinks: “If people go to such lengths to get candy, you have to give them something too. Then you have to offer them the best quality imaginable. Something they won’t find in the supermarket.” And he solemnly swears: As long as I’m in the market, I will offer my customers the best candy available. Klepper Sr. doesn’t know it yet, of course, but there, at that moment, lies the seed for The Best Drop Ever.
Even if you resolve to offer your customers only top quality, things can sometimes go wrong. That’s not a bad thing, because mistakes can also turn out well. Then you make an unexpected discovery. In science they call that serendipity. Klepper & Klepper call this the Wet Bats Effect. It’s like this: Sometime at the beginning of the 21st century, Klepper Sr. a licorice in the shape of bats. The recipe was wrong: they attracted moisture and became wet. The Oath of Klepper Sr. mind, you can’t sell that. But people kept asking about it. So people can also love a licorice where something is not quite right.
When Klepper Sr. comes up with the idea to celebrate his 25th anniversary with anniversary licorice, Klepper Jr. (who also spent the necessary hours in his father’s market stall) was immediately enthusiastic. Thanks to his many years of experience, Klepper Sr. is exactly what the average Dutch like. He remembers the bat drop. To ensure that the licorice no longer gets wet, Klepper & Klepper think that the starch in the licorice is the culprit. They will work with an independent drop maker with the recipe. Due to the changing recipe, there is no longer any gluten and no gelatin.
Klepper & Klepper continue to experiment with the ingredients and the drying time until it is completely right: the full-sweet taste (with a little bit of spice), the mouthfeel, the texture, the bite. This is how licorice should taste!
Klepper Sr. has developed the licorice for its loyal customers. To thank them for their many years of loyalty. But when all the licorice is given away, people keep coming back for it. They have never tasted such delicious licorice. “There’s more to it,” Klepper Jr thinks. by himself. And not much later he says that out loud to his father.
